Cross red velvet cake with brownies and you get Red Devil Brownies (named after my dog, who is truly a red devil). Unlike most brownie recipes, this creation has a more cake-like texture, and unlike most cake recipes, this recipe calls for an 8x8 square brownie pan. It's a bright and festive addition for any party, and you can dress it up even more with icing.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups flour
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup pureed prunes (hint: use baby food)
2 Tbsp oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 oz red food coloring
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Grease an 8x8 square brownie pan and set aside.
- Sift the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
- Combine the remaining wet ingredients in a large mixing cup (or small bowl).
- Whisk thoroughly.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry, and mix just enough to combine all ingredients.
- Pour the batter into the brownie pan and bake for 25-30 minutes. Prick the center of the brownies with a fork or toothpick to test when it is done.
- Allow to cool before slicing.
